COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland softball head coach Laura Watten announced the signing of a top-notch recruit recently, as Candice Beards (Ringwood, N.J./Paramus Catholic), a USA High School Under Armour All American and four-time All-County player, signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Terrapins.
Beards is a four-year Varsity starter at Paramus Catholic and a four-year All-County team honoree. Playing first base, she is a two-time Adidas Top 100 player, and has been invited to play in the USA High School Under Armour All-American game this summer. For the last four years, the Bronx, N.Y. native has played on the Jersey Inferno Gold team.
"Candice is the perfect addition to the Terrapin softball team," Watten said. "She possesses an amazing work ethic and spirit that will be a great compliment to our team chemistry and future success of our program."
This past season she led her high school team in hits, walks, triples, home runs, stolen bases and runs scored. Earlier this year, she was named an ESPN RISE East Athlete of the Week and New Jersey Athlete of the Week. She went 8 for 9 that week, and also hit for the cycle in one game. That same week, she went 3 for 3 in another game, including three home runs, with seven RBI's and a walk. She drew five walks total in the week.
Off of the softball field, she is a Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do, a National Honor Society member, the Director of Student Activities and serves as Vice President of the African American Club at her school.
The Terrapins close out their regular season this weekend at Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Boston College. The Terps and the Eagles will take the field Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader and Sunday at 1 p.m. for a single game.
