Terrapins Held Off By Huskers

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Despite a late rally, the Terrapins Maryland softball team fell to Nebraska 8-1 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Terrapins stranded 10 runners on base.

In the bottom of the first, the Huskers scored four runs off four hits and added one more off a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

The Terps (3-5) got on the board in the top of the third. Senior Nikki Maier drew a leadoff walk, then two batters later, junior Candice Beards drove her in with a triple to right center. Beards would notch two hits and an RBI on the day.

The Huskers tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to make it 6-1 when Mattie Fowler hit an RBI single down the left field line.

Maryland rallied to as Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz picked up back-to-back walks with one out in the top of the fourth, but the Terps could not capitalize.

In the bottom of the innings, the Huskers' Gabby Banda led off with a double to left. Tay Edward followed that up with a single and was thrown out at third off a defensive play by Shannon Bustillos to Kaitlyn Schmeiser to Schwartz at third. Banda scored on the play to make it 7-1.

Nebraska's Hailey Decker doubled of the middle to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Dawna Tyson drove her in with a single to left to make it 8-1.

The Terps staged a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. Schwartz sent a single up the middle, then sophomore Bria Taylor was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Liana Newton came on to pinch run for Taylor, then Maier picked up another walk to load the bases. Junior Amanda McCann grounded out to end the inning.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser, who pitched 5.2 innings for the Terrapins, sent the Huskers down, 1-2-3, in the bottom of the sixth. She gave up four runs, two walks and notched four strikeouts on the day. Newton made her first career start in the circle.

Next, the Terrapins play No. 19 UCLA at 3 p.m. ET Saturday and No. 9 California at 5:30 p.m. ET to round out their weekend in Palm Springs, Calif.
