COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapin softball team took two from the Howard Lady Bison in a doubleheader in College Park Wednesday evening. Powerful pitching and success at the plate lead the Terps to a 3-0 win in game one and a 9-1 win in game two.
The Terrapin offense started to come alive Wednesday night, with freshman Lexi Carroll claiming the night's biggest highlight. In the bottom of the first inning of game two, Carroll came to the plate with no outs and the bases loaded. She hit her first career home run to centerfield for the grand slam and an instant 4-0 Terps' lead.
Five Terrapins had double-digit hits on the night, while 10 had at least one hit. The Terps knocked in 11 RBI, hit five multiple-base hits and hit two home runs.
Both starting pitchers, sophomore Kendra Knight, the current ACC Pitcher of the Week who started game one, and junior Kerry Hickey, who started game two, had strong performances on the night. They combined for 22 strikeouts, one run (unearned) and just three hits.
The Terps struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning in game one, as Knight racked up 10 strikeouts in the first four innings in the circle. After her performance tonight, Knight leads the Terps with an ERA of 1.79 and 86 strikeouts on the year.
Senior Alex Schultz jumpstarted Maryland's offense in the fourth inning with her leadoff home run to left field. Later in the inning, senior Nadine Blackie singled to right center field and scored when sophomore Michelle Takeda tripled down the right field line. Maryland took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning.
Leading off at the plate in the bottom of the fifth, Knight doubled to centerfield, then scored on an error by Howard.
In game two, Hickey picked up right where Knight left off with another strong performance in the circle. She recorded eight strikeouts in four innings before ending the game with 11 strikeouts in six innings.
After Carroll's grand slam in the first, Blackie doubled to score freshman Nikki Maier to give Maryland a 5-0 lead after the first inning. Carroll earned her fifth RBI of the night in the bottom of the fourth inning when she drove in sophomore Vangie Galindo.
Howard scored its only run of the night when infielder Nicole Saez doubled to left field, then scored on a Terrapins' error.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Terps scored a run off of a Howard passed ball to make the score 7-0. Junior Marisha Branson doubled to right center to score Lauren Ghent from third. Branson scored when freshman Melissa Mancuso singled to finalize the score at 9-1.
The Terrapins will open Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against Virginia. Admission is free for all fans wishing to attend.
