TAMPA, Fla. - The Maryland softball team (6-5) battled through seven rain-drenched innings to capture an impressive 7-2 victory against Seton Hall in its opening game at the USF-Holiday Inn Tournament in Tampa, Fla.
The Terrapin offense drowned the Pirates in the second inning when right fielder Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) singled to center field. After first baseman Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) sacrificed Pollock to second base, catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) singled. With runners on the corners and one out, starting pitcher Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) powered the Terrapins onto the scoreboard with a three-run homer to right field.
Second baseman Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.) contributed a two-run homer in the fifth and Radford went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
Double-threat Cyphert pitched six innings in the rain-delayed game. She struck out four and gave up four hits and two unearned runs. Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) entered in the seventh to close out the game with two strikeouts.
The rain-adjusted schedule has the Terrapins squaring off against Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Maryland's game against Indiana, scheduled for Friday at noon, was rained out and will be made up on Sunday, as will the Terps' contest against Hofstra that was moved from Saturday.
