COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team will head south to Columbus, Ga. this weekend to participate in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's annual Leadoff Classic. The Terrapins (2-3, 0-0) will play five games in three days, two of which will be against top ten teams.
The Terps will open the weekend Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against No. 7 Alabama. The Tide is 8-2 on the year.
Maryland will hit the field again Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. to take on Iowa. The Hawkeyes and the Terrapins have not met since 1999.
In their third game of the weekend, the Terrapins will face off against Mississippi State Saturday at 4 p.m. for the first meeting between the two teams.
Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. they will take on Central Florida. The Terps are 1-0 all-time over the Knights after a 2008 win.
Closing the weekend, Maryland will go up against No. 4 Michigan Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Terrapins earned their first program win over the Wolverines in 2008 with a 2-0 win in 10 innings.
Maryland opened its 2010 season last weekend in Florida Atlantic's Kickoff Classic tournament. The Terps went 2-3 on the weekend, beating Pittsburgh and Florida Atlantic and falling to Kentucky and twice to Mississippi.
Stellar pitching in all five games gave the Terps solid footing to win all five games. Starting pitchers Kerry Hickey and Kendra Knight combined for 41 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched. They gave up just six earned runs over the weekend.
