Terrapins Dominate Fall Ball Slate

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapins dominated their fall slate, going 7-1 in the two-weekend stretch. They outscored their opponents, 81-15 in the seven games of the round robins.

In their first weekend series, they played Mount St. Mary's, Hagerstown and Delaware Tech Sept. 29-30. They beat Mount St. Mary's, 4-2, to open the first round robin. Junior Mandy Gardner led off the bottom of the second with a base hit to left, then scored later in the inning to open the scoring.

Then, the Terps rolled past Delaware Tech, 14-2 in the second game. Gardner again got on base with a base hit to left to to start the second inning. Senior Melissa Mancuso drew a bases-loaded walk to open the flood gates. Senior Nikki Maier scored three runs in the win with one hit by pitch, a double and a single.

In the next round robin, Oct. 13-14, they took care of Towson, George Washington and Delaware State. They beat Towson 6-3 to open the weekend. In the bottom of the second, junior Candice Beards homered to put the Terrapins up 2-0 and get things going. In the third, Garner doubled to score senior Sara Acosta and sophomore Shannon Bustillos. Later, in the sixth, Juli Strange doubled to right to score Corey Schwartz. Bustillos was hit by a pitch to score Maryland's sixth run.

Freshman Maddie Martin pitched against the Tigers and picked up seven strikeouts.

Against George Washington, Maryland won 12-2. Garner hit a three-run homer in the third for a 3-1 lead. In the fifth innings, junior Amanda McCann led off with a triple to right, then scored on a ground out. The Terps drew four more walks and tallied two more hits to tack on eight more runs that inning.

In their first game against Delaware State, the Terps wasted no time with an eight-hit bottom of the first to score five runs. Maier contributed to the Terrapins' next six runs with a double and a triple. They won 11-1.

In the final game of the fall, the Terps beat the Hornets 22-3. They had a six-run bottom of the first. Bustillos got things going with a two-run homer, then Schwartz added the third run when she drew a bases-loaded walk. Mancuso then doubled to score two more, then senior Kelly Trimble added the last run of the inning with a sacrifice.

The Hornets added two more runs in the top of the second, but Maryland's offense kept on rolling. Beards hit a triple to score two more. Bustillos added her second home run of the day with a three-run shot. Maier hit another three-run shot three batters later.

Martin was the Terps' workhorse in the circle over the two round robin events. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser and Samantha Schweickhardt both made relief appearances.
