Maryland Softball Earns Walk-Off Win In Speedline Invitational Opener

March 7, 2002

Plant City, Fla. - Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) powered the Terps (8-6) to a 2-1 victory against Michigan State in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday afternoon. Cyphert, who pinch hit for Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), drilled a two-run homer to left centerfield to give Maryland its first walk-off victory of the season.

Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.), who pinch ran for catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) after she singled, scored the tying run on Cyphert's homerun.

Maryland trailed early after Spartan catcher Lacy Hauxhurst homered off winning pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) in the second inning. The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning, but the Terps managed to keep Michigan State off the board.

Later in the afternoon, Maryland dropped a 10-8 game to Brigham Young. The Cougars have a seven-game winning streak. Maryland resumes play in Plant City Friday morning against Florida International at 10 a.m., and Georgia State at noon.
