COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team looks to extend its best start in school history as they welcome UMBC in its home opener Wednesday at Robert E. Taylor Stadium. The Terps are on a four-game winning streak and will look to lengthen it against the Retrievers in a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. The games were originally scheduled to be played Feb. 20, but were postponed due to icy conditions.
Meredith Nelles, Sarah Dooley, and Hickey have shared the bulk of the Terps' pitching this year, with Dooley leading the team in wins with three and Nelles leading the team in strikeouts (28) and innings pitched with 27 1/3. Hickey is second on the team with an ERA of 0.89 in 15 2/3 innings pitched.
The Retrievers come in to the game with a record of 1-3, winning their last game against James Madison, 4-3, in the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic.
UMBC is led by 2007 America East First-Team and All-Rookie selection Amanda Fefel, 2007 America East Second-Team selection Ashley Gray, and senior captains Kali Shirk and Dana Shepherd.
The Terps are 13-3 all-time against the Retrievers. The Terps have not lost to UMBC since 1997.
