March 29, 2002

Fairfax, Va. - Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) struck out 11 for a 5-3 win over Brown in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Amanda Bettker pitched a complete game shutout to capture a 4-0 victory and finish out the sweep.

Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the first game. The Terps were trailing in the sixth inning when catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) led off with a base hit. Cyphert followed with a walk and Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) bunted to move Radford to third base. Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) then singled in Radford to give the Terps the lead.

In the second game, all of the Terp runs came in the third inning. Brown starting pitcher Laura Decker walked the first four Terrapin batters in the inning to put Maryland on the board. Cyphert singled home Moczulski and Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) walked to drive in Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.). Radford scored the final Terp run on Jillian Callaway's (Brandywine, Md.) sacrifice fly.

Maryland will face off against Siena, George Mason, and Brown on Saturday in the George Mason Spring Clash in Fairfax, Va. Maryland's first game against Siena will start at 11 a.m.
