Terrapins Split Opening Day At Bama Bash

Feb. 8, 2002

Box Score 1, Box Score 2

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Rookie right fielder Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) began her Maryland softball career with a bang, helping the Terrapins open the 2002 season with a split on the first day of competition at the Bama Bash. The freshman blasted a two-run towering homer just inside the left field foul pole in Game 1 against Evansville to lift the Terrapins to a 4-3 victory and announce her arrival in the ranks of college softball. Later in the evening, Maryland fell, 3-0, to the No. 13 Alabama Crimson tide.

After a leadoff single by sophomore Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.) began the fourth inning against the Purple Aces, senior Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) launched a double to right center to bring home the Terps first run of the season. Redshirt sophomore Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) sparked the Terps with a two-out walk and stolen base in the fifth, and came around to score on a Casey Leiter (Lake Stephens, Wash.) single. Sweeney, who missed all of the 2001 season while recovering from surgery, shook off the rust early with a 3-for-3 performance in Game 1 with three stolen bases. The Terps combined to outhit Evansville, 9-3.

The Purple Aces capitalized on a pair of Terp errors in the bottom of the inning, using timely hitting to score three unearned runs and take the momentary advantage. But a one-out single by senior Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) in the sixth set the table for Pollock, who cleared it with the first hit of her collegiate career.

Sophomore Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) fanned 10 Purple Aces in the complete game victory and allowed no earned runs on only three hits.

Senior hurler Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) took the Game 2 loss against the host Crimson Tide. No. 13 Alabama used a RBI double and sacrifice fly to cross two runs in the second, and tacked another score in the third on a pair of singles and a Terrapin miscue. Pollock tallied the lone hit for the Terps against Tide All-America pitcher Shelley Laird.

Bama Bash action continues for the Terrapins tomorrow at noon EST (11 a.m. Tuscaloosa local time) when the Terrapins take on the Samford Bulldogs.
