TAMPA, Fla. - The Maryland softball team won both of its games Friday in the University of South Florida's The Game tournament in Tampa. The Terps (14-9, 0-2) rallied to beat No. 18 Oklahoma State 2-1 in their first game of the day, then beat Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 in the second.

In game one against the Cowgirls, junior Kerry Hickey recorded 12 strikeouts in her 7.0 inning performance to pace the Terps. Four Terrapins got hits in the game, including Hickey and sophomore Vangie Galindo.

The Cowgirls struck first, scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Alysia Hamilton scored on a passed ball.

Sophomore Kendra Knight and junior Marisha Branson both singled to open up the Maryland offense in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Michelle Takeda advanced both with a bunt, then both scored on an error by Oklahoma State's Julie Ward at first base.

Knight started the second game for the Terps and went 4.0 innings, giving up just three hits, one walk and racking up seven strikeouts. Hickey pitched the remaining three innings. She gave up one hit, one walk and had six strikeouts.

Maryland hit the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Senior Alex Schultz got on base when she was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on senior Nadine Blackie's single to left. Schultz scored on a throwing error by Eagles' catcher when Blackie stole second base. Branson drove in Blackie with a single up the left side.

The Terps scored their final run when Lauren Ghent, who pinch ran for Hickey after a walk, scored on a Nikki Maier single to shortstop.

The Terps will stay in Florida for the weekend to continue to play in the University of South Florida's The Game tournament. The Terps will play North Florida at 10 a.m. and Dartmouth at noon Saturday and Texas Tech at 9 a.m. Sunday.
