Terps' Late Rally Falls Short vs. Noles

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team scored six runs in a late push vs. Florida State Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Seminoles took the series finale, 14-9.

Florida State (28-12, 6-2) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Victoria East led off with a double off the centerfield wall, then the next two batters drew walks to load the bases. Kirstin Austin doubled to score two runs, then Maddie O'Brien hit a sac fly for the third run.

Maryland (17-18, 4-2) tied it up in the bottom of the first. Sara Acosta and Nikki Maier tied the game up with a base hit to center.

The Noles scored a run for a 4-3 lead in the top of the second. Celeste Gomez drew a leadoff walk, then scored off an error by the Terrapins with two outs. In the top of the third, they added two more runs off a two-run homer by O'Brien. Courtney Senas hit a grand slam later in the inning for a 10-3 Noles lead. They added one more to make it 11-3 off a sacrifice fly.

Florida State would add one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-run lead at 13-3 into the bottom of the fifth. The Terrapin offense battled to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth. McCann reached on a fielding error and went all the way to third to jumpstart the inning. Acosta doubled to left to score McCann, then Shannon Bustillos reached on a fielder's choice. Maier hit a home run to left to make it 13-8 heading to the top of the sixth.

Both the Seminoles and the Terps added a run in the sixth inning. Florida State added its run with a sacrifice fly. Maryland added its run when Lindsey Schmeiser doubled down the leftfield line to score Juli Strange, who had been hit by a pitch.

Maryland will welcome Coppin State (8-15, 3-3 MEAC) to College Park for a 4 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday. Live stats will be available and parking and admission are free.
