ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Kerry Hickey's walk-off home run in the bottom of seventh propelled the University of Maryland Softball team to a 6-4 victory in the UCF Knights Games Tournament Saturday afternoon. The win moves Maryland to 12-1, the best start in school history. The Terps will face off against the U.S. National team later in day.
Maryland pinch hitter Niki Lau singled to lead off the seventh inning and advanced to second on Jenny Belak's sacrifice bunt. Sarde Stewart was down to the Terps' last strike before singling Lau home to tie the ballgame.
Trailing by one in their last at-bat, the Rattlers' pinch hitter Unika McIntosh singled to lead off the inning. Rhianna Green doubled down the left field line and after a walk, Maryland's starter Meredith Nelles came back into the game to replace Kerry Hickey in the circle. The Rattlers hit two consecutive sacrifice flies to take the lead.
After an error and a single in the top of the first inning, Florida A&M's Joyce Harold singled home Green and Krista Richardson to give the Rattlers an early 2-0 lead. The runs broke Nelles' 17 1/3 inning scoreless streak, but both runs were unearned.
The Terps responded quickly with Belak leading off the first inning with a single, and was brought home on a Kerry Hickey single to right field. Hickey's single extends her team-leading hitting streak to eight games.
In the second inning, Devon Williams singled and advanced on an Alex Schultz groudout. Belak singled Williams home with a line drive to center field to tie the game at 2. The Terps scored in its third consecutive inning in the third when Sarde Stewart walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Brittany Bessho sacrifice fly.
