Maryland Splits Day One at NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Maryland softball team split day one of a weekend series at NC State Saturday with a 2-1 win in the first game and a 4-0 loss in game two in Raleigh.

Sophomore Shannon Bustillos hit the go-ahead double to give Maryland (20-19, 5-3 ACC) the win in the first game. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser gave up one run in her 5.0 innings with five hits and four strikeouts.

NC State's Kirsty Grant hit a leadoff homer to start the bottom of the third. NC State (18-17-1, 4-6) led 1-0 until the top of the sixth. Amanda McCann led off with a single, then went to second on a passed ball. Sara Acosta moved her to third. The Wolfpack intentionally walked freshman Lindsey Schmeiser to put two on. With two outs, Bustillos doubled to right center to take the lead.

Freshman Madison Martin came on to pitch the last two innings and allowed just one hit to clinch the win.

In game two, the Wolfpack took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Bethaney Wells hit an RBI single for the first run, then Leah Jones hit an RBI base hit to score Wells. Caitlin Dent hit an RBI double to add the third run in the bottom of the fourth. Renada Davis hit a solo home run to finalize the score at 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth.

The Terrapins rallied for two on off of base hits by Lexi Carroll and Liana Newton in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to take the lead.

After this weekend's games, the Terrapins will take on George Mason (9-23) Wednesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader in Fairfax, Va.
