TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Maryland softball's Lindsey Schmeiser was voted Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year by the league's head coaches Wednesday. Schmeiser also represents the Terps on the 10-member All-ACC First Team.
The rookie shortstop from Dunkirk, Md. led the ACC in RBI with 55 in the regular season, one short of the Maryland school record for most in a season. The record was set by current assistant coach Amber Jackson in her 2007 senior season.
Schmeiser ranks in the top 10 in batting average (.350), runs scored (51), total bases (102), slugging percentage (.713), triples (4), on-base percentage (.448), and home runs (11). She is the first Terrapin to be named Freshman of the Year since Kelly Shipman in 1996.
"There's a lot of young talent in our conference, so for Lindsey to be named Freshman of the Year is just great for her and for us," head coach Laura Watten said. "She's worked so hard all season to stay consistent and keep battling. She definitely deserves this."
The Terps (31-25, 13-8 ACC) finished third in the ACC and set a school record for most ACC wins in a season with 13.
"We've worked really hard this year to prove how good we are," Schmeiser said. "Everyone has believed in me, so I've just kept playing hard and good things have come."
The third-seeded Terps will take on sixth-seeded Virginia Tech (34-18, 9-11) Thursday in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals in Tallahassee, Fla. at 11 a.m. The game will be shown on RSN, which includes Comcast Sports Net locally, FS South, FS Florida, NESN and more.
