Maryland Closes Regular Season at VT

  • Maryland (29-24, 11-7 ACC) will head to Virginia Tech (33-16, 8-9) this weekend for a three-game series to close the regular season. They will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon in Blacksburg and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

  • The Terrapins currently sit at fourth in the ACC standings. They are two games behind second-place NC State and a game behind third-place UNC.

  • All three games will be shown live online for a fee on Hokie All Access.

    Scouting The Terps
    • Maryland will head to Virginia Tech this weekend for a three-game series to close the regular season. They will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon in Blacksburg and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

    • The Terps have gone 24-10 since March 10 and have won nine of their last 12 games.

    • Junior Lexi Carroll has had a hit in each of the last eight games and Shannon Bustillos is on a seven-game hit streak.

    • Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser has 55 RBI so far this season, which is second in the ACC and in the Maryland record books. The record for most RBI in a season is 56, set by current assistant coach Amber Jackson in 2007. She leads the league with her slugging percentage of .730. Sara Acosta has scored 111 runs in her career, which is seventh on Maryland's all-time list. The record is 129, set by Jennifer Potzman in her four-year career (1998-01).

    • The Terrapins are coming off of a 34-22 season, in which they earned their third straight NCAA Regionals bid.

    • Maryland returns four seniors this year in Sara Acosta, Lexi Carroll, Nikki Maier and Melissa Mancuso.

    • Head Coach Laura Watten returns eight starters and 11 letterwinners from last year's NCAA Regionals squad.

    Scouting Virginia Tech
    • Virginia Tech is 33-16 overall and 8-9 in ACC play. The Hokies have won six of their last seven games, including a series win over Virginia this past weekend.
    • Courtney Liddle and Kylie McGoldrick lead the Hokies with their batting averages of .370. Liddle has 50 hits on the year and McGoldrick has 47.
    • Maryland owns the series, 17-15. The Terps swept the three-game series in College Park in 2011, then were swept in Blacksburg in 2012. The Terps also fell to the Hokies in last year's ACC Tournament Quarterfinals, 5-2. The Terrapins held a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Kat Banks hit a grand slam for a 5-1 lead. Maryland rallied in the top of the seventh with a home run by Sloane Van Meter, couldn't come all the way back.

    The Terrapins will play a strong schedule against a number of the nation's top teams.
    • The Terps will play seven games against teams in the preseason USA Today/NFCA Division I Coaches Top 25.
    • The Terps will battle 16 teams that competed in last year's NCAA championships. So far, they are 10-12 against those teams.

    Laura Watten returns for her seventh season at the helm of the up-and-coming Terrapin softballa program. Her current career record is 589-398 (.597) and her record at Maryland is 267-191 (.583). Below is a breakdown of just a few of her career highlights:

    Watten Adds Two to Staff
    Watten hired Terrapin alum Jillian Callaway and Shannon Riley this summer.
    • Callaway was an assistant coach for the Terrapins from 2004-06 after graduating. As a player from 1999-03, she was a standout infielder and finished her career on Maryland's all-time top-10 list for games played (195) and started (189), hits (128), and RBI (63). She owns and operates 5 Star Athletics, a program she founded to promote softball and instruct the top young players in the area. She has worked with current Maryland players Kaitlyn Schmeiser, Lindsey Schmeiser and Bridget Hawvermale through her program.
    • Riley, the director of operations, has worked with Callaway as the director of operations for 5 Star Athletics, managing business operations, organizing camps and clinics, and working with local programs and universities to promote softball. Riley played second base and was a slapper on the Mount St. Mary's softball team.
