BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Maryland softball team finished third in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the regular season, after a 4-0 loss at Virginia Tech Sunday in the regular season finale. The Terrapins took the first two games vs. the Hokies Saturday to take the series.
The third-seeded Terps (31-25, 13-8 ACC) and the sixth-seeded Hokies (34-18, 9-11) will meet Thursday in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals in Tallahassee, Fla. at 11 a.m. The game will be shown on RSN, which includes Comcast Sports Net locally, FS South, FS Florida, NESN and more. The two wins Saturday gave the Terps 13 ACC wins this season, which is the most in school history. Maryland has now won 30 games for the seventh time in head coach Laura Watten's eight seasons.
The Hokies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo home run by Lauren Gaskill.
It stayed a one-run game through five innings, as the Terrapins left six runners on base. Virginia Tech added three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dani Anderson led off with a hit, then Courtney Liddle homered to make it 3-0. Kat Banks hit another RBI base hit to finalize the score.
The Terrapins have won 11 of their last 15 games over the last three weeks. Candice Beards extended her hit streak to 16 straight games.
Freshman Sara Acosta has scored 113 runs in her career, which is seventh on Maryland's all-time list. The record is 129, set by Jennifer Potzman in her four-year career (1998-01).
