BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Maryland softball team won the first two games in a three-game series at Virginia Tech Saturday to clinch a top-three finish in the ACC. The Terps won game one, 3-1 and game two, 9-7.

The Terps (31-24, 13-7 ACC) and the Hokies (33-18, 8-11) will play a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday to close the series and the regular season. The game will be shown online for a fee on HokieSports.com and live stats will be available. For live updates, log on to https://twitter.com/TerpsSoftball.

With a win Sunday, the Terrapins will finish second in the ACC for their highest conference finish since 1999. The two wins Saturday give the Terps 13 ACC wins this season, which is the most in school history. Maryland has now won 30 games for the seventh time in head coach Laura Watten's eight seasons.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched a complete game in the first game with five hits, one earned run and one walk surrendered. She picked up eight strikeouts.

The Terps took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Sara Acosta and Lindsey Schmeiser got on with back-to-back singles for runners on the corners. They pulled off a double steal play as Acosta took home for the first run. Shannon Bustillos and Lexi Carroll were both hit by pitches to load the bases for a red-hot Candice Beards with no outs. Beards extended her 13-game hit streak with an RBI base hit to left to score Schmeiser from third.

Virginia Tech's Amanda Ake put the Hokies on the board with a solo home run to left center to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Senior Nikki Maier answered right back for the Terps with a lead off solo shot of her own to start the top of the sixth.

In game two, Acosta drew a walk in the top of the first, then Bustillos homered down the left field line for an early 2-0 Terps lead. The Hokies' Courtney Liddle hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead.

Maryland capitalized on some Virginia Tech miscues for seven runs in the top of the third. Lindsey Schmeiser drew a leadoff walk, then Bustillos singled and Maier walked to load the bases with one out. Carroll reached on a Virginia Tech error, which also brought in two runs for a 4-3 Maryland lead. Juli Strange brought in another run with a bunt single, then Melissa Mancuso reached on a fielder's choice and notched an RBI to make it 6-3. On another double steal play, Mancuso took second and Strange took home. Amanda McCann got on off of another Virginia Tech error, which brought in Mancuso. Acosta brought her in to make it 9-3 with a hit to right.

The Hokies added two runs in the bottom of the sixth off of an RBI double by Dani Anderson and an RBI single by Liddle. They picked up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh when Bkaye Smith tripled.

Freshman Madison Martin allowed two hits and two earned runs in her start in the circle. Carroll came on and pitched 6.1 innings. She gave up three earned runs and eight hits. Kaitlyn Schmeiser took over to get the last two outs in the bottom of the seventh

The Terps have gone 24-10 since March 10 and have won 11 of their last 14 games over the last three weeks. With her two hits in Saturday's games, Beards extended her hit streak to 15 straight games.

Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser has 55 RBI so far this season, which is second in the ACC and in the Maryland record books. The record for most RBI in a season is 56. Sara Acosta has scored 113 runs in her career, which is seventh on Maryland's all-time list. The record is 129, set by Jennifer Potzman in her four-year career (1998-01).

After this weekend's games, the Terrapins will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for the ACC Tournament, which begins next Thursday. The Terps' seeding, opponents and game times will be available Sunday evening.
