Beards Powers Terps to Split with George Mason

Fairfax, Va. - Candice Beards went 5-6 at the plate to power the Maryland softball team to split a doubleheader against George Mason Wednesday afternoon. The Terps fell 8-3 in the first game and won 4-3 in the second.

Although Maryland's (21-21) designated hitter Candice Beards went 2-for-3 in the first game, it wasn't enough to seal a victory against the Patriots (12-27). 

After Mason scored its first run in the top of the first, the Patriots extended their lead to 4-0 in the second inning.

Maryland's first run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning when Corey Schwartz's single sent Candice Beards home. Beards reached on a double down the right field line.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mason scored two runs to increase its lead to 6-1. 

With one runner on base, Maryland had a chance to narrow the Mason's lead in the top of the sixth, but was unable to send her home. Mason then added two more runs to bring the score to 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Terps battled for a comeback, but although they drove in two more runs, they were unable to get the win. Shannon Bustillos doubled down the left field line to bring home Lindsey Schmeiser from second base. Then, Bria Taylor reached home off a Beards single to right field ending the game at 8-3.

In the second game of the night, Beards went 3-3 at the plate and had two RBI's in the second game to power the Terps to the 4-3 win.

The Terps set the tone in the top of the second inning when Lexi Carroll scored off a first baseman fielding error. 

After a scoreless inning from Mason, the Terps added to its lead in the top of the third inning when Beards' double to left center sent Bustillos home.

Mason's first run of the second game came in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Beards' single sent Schmeiser and Acosta home to increase the Terps' lead to 4-1.

Although the Patriots scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Terps held them to finish the game 4-3.
