BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Maryland softball team opened the 2013 season with a 5-3 win over LIU Brooklyn Friday in the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic. Senior Sara Acosta went 2-for-2 to help lead the Terrapins to their first win of the year.
The Terps got in gear early, holding the Blackbirds scoreless in a three-up, three-down inning in the top of the first.
Junior Amanda McCann and Acosta led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back walks. Sophomore Shannon Bustillos bunted them over to second and third, then junior Mandy Gardner knocked in both for runs when she reached on an error. Junior Candice Beards grounded out to score the third run and give Maryland an early 3-0 lead.
Acosta tacked on another run in the bottom of the third when she tripled, then scored on a throwing error by an LIU outfielder.
Freshman pitcher Maddie Martin held the Blackbirds without a baserunner through the first three innings.
LIU got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth. Pinch hitter Sara Shier doubled to score two, then Nicole Archer got a base hit to score the final run for the Blackbirds.
The Terrapins answered right back with a run in the bottom of the fourth when senior Melissa Mancuso singled with two outs.
Martin pitched 6.0 innings with four hits allowed and four strikeouts. Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser came on to pitch the final inning. She allowed just one walk and notched a strikeout.
Maryland's game vs. FAU scheduled for Friday afternoon has been cancelled. The Terps will play UMass, who is receiving votes in the latest polls, at 10 a.m. Saturday and Michigan at noon. They will close the tournament with a game vs. LIU at 1 p.m. Sunday.
