ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Cici Onyekwere won both throwing events, sweeping the women’s shot put and 20-pound weight throw Tuesday, to lead Maryland to a second-place team finish at the Sweetheart Multi-Mix Madness indoor track and field meet hosted by Navy.

Onyekwere had a mark of 46 feet, 2 inches to win the shot put and captured the weight throw at 53-0.75. Her win led a 1-2 finish for the Terps in the weight throw, as teammate Sonya Napariu was second at 53-0. Napariu was third in the shot put with a season-best mark of 43-5.25.

Maryland, which had some student-athletes sitting out their main events, finished with 135 team points. Navy won the meet with 199 points, while Johns Hopkins was third with 73.

The Terrapins also had sweeps in other events on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, senior Amina Smith posted a career-best for the second straight meet, going 6-0.75 to win the high jump. Her mark is a quarter-inch off the school record of 6-1, set in 1980 by Paula Girven. Thea LaFond and Amber Melville went 5-10.75 to finish second and third Tuesday.

Jordan Simmons (7.87) and Noella Anyangwe (7.90) took the top places in the 60-meter dash, while Thea LaFond (8.73) and Lisa Meneau (8.92) swept the 60-meter hurdles.

Maryland went 1-2 in the sprint medley relay, with the winning team of Micha Powell, Anyangwe, Taylor Tucker and Shade Pratt finishing in 4:06.40.

The Terps had some of their student-athletes compete for the first time this season in the pentathlon. Alexandra Cimino placed fourth overall (3,065), followed by Kristi Person in fifth (3,030) and Lauren Ball and seventh (3,012).

Those three marks rank eighth, ninth and 10th at Maryland over the past 10 years in the pentathlon.

Maryland is scheduled to compete next on Friday at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games at the New York Armory.

The Terrapins are preparing for the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships to be held at Clemson on Feb. 27 and March 1.
