CARY, N.C. - The Maryland men's and women's outdoor track and field team completed day one of action at the 2013 ACC Championships Thursday.
A pair of freshman led the Terps in the discus as Chioma Onyekwere (146-09) and Sonya Napariu (143-01) took ninth and 10th, respectively, with career-best marks. Pat Cole continued his stellar sophomore campaign with a 10th place showing (154-08).
Sophomore Jordan Simmons took 17th in the women's 200m with a team season-best mark of 24.92 while classmate William Sherman took 20th with a season-best 22.33.
The Terps had one male and for female competitors in the 1500m, led by Maryam Fikri, who finished 18th with a team season-best time of 4:34.20. Other runners included Emily VandeWater (26th - 4:38.80), Catherine Sheffo (33rd - 4:47.26), and Christy Goldmann (35th) on the women's side and Joshua Finkle (39th) on the men's.
Freshmen Lauren Ball and Laura Dally are currently in 12th and 14th place, respectively, in the heptathlon with three events remaining Friday.
The schedule for Friday has been revised due to the threat of inclement weather.
Events will begin with the men's javelin throw at 10:30 a.m. as planned, but the starts for several field events have been moved up to earlier times. In addition, the starting time for the running events has been moved up to 3:15 p.m., two hours earlier than originally planned.
