EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore Thea LaFond broke the school record in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday evening.
On her first jump, LaFond recorded a distance of 43-5.75, breaking her previous personal best of 42-11.75. Until today, LaFond shared the school record with Marchelle Payne, who also cleared 42-11.75 back in 1993.
LaFond finished 10th overall in the women's triple jump, with the winning jump of 44-9.75 coming from Shanieka Thomas of San Diego State. With the 10th place finish, LaFond garnered second team All-America recognition.
Lafond will shift her focus to the high jump, which begins at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.
