As a Freshman: Indoor- Set team's best 5,000 meter run time of 18:03.87 at the Meyo Invitational, finishing fifth...took third in the mile at the Terrapin Invitational...finished sixth in the mile at the Maryland Invitational.

Before Maryland: Ran varsity cross country and track at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Coraopolis, Pa....was captain of the cross country team in 2001, as well as the MVP...was also MVP of her track team in 2002, she was named the Most Valuable Female Athlete...part of school record-holding teams in the 4X100, 4X400 and the current school record holder in the 800m, 1600m, 3200m and shotput...named to the All-State team in 2002...was the state champion in the 3200m in 2002.

Personal: Katie Nash Purcell...born April 20, 1984...daughter of Nancy and Ray Riesmeyer, and Gerald Purcell...has three brothers, Mike, Charles and Jeff...cousin Mark Eaton plays hockey for the Nashville Predators...favorite athlete is Steve Prefontaine...majoring in mathematics.
