COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's track team has moved into the top 10 of the National Dual Meet Power Rankings, compiled by Idaho State University.
The Terps, coming off an impressive showing at the Patriot Games in Fairfax, Va., are No. 9 in this week's edition of the rankings.
The team rankings are based on the quality of athletic performance, team depth, and dual meet scoring potential. The system rates teams similarly to the way decathletes and hepthatletes are rated. Points are given to two athletes per event in a dual meet, assigned on the basis of quality of performance. The top person in each event has her points doubled to adjust for the value of the top performer on each team in a dual meet. The points for all events are then tallied, resulting in the total ranking score. The Terps are just five rating points out of the top five spots.
The Maryland men's team is currently ranked 38th using the same rating system.
