GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women's Outdoor Track & Field Team was announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. The 51-member team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee.
North Carolina led all league schools with 13 members on the Golden Anniversary team while Clemson was second with ten honorees. Virginia had seven players selected, followed by Georgia Tech (5), Florida State, Maryland and NC State (4), Wake Forest (3) and Duke with one.
Maryland honorees include:
Paula Girven, Maryland (1978-1980) A two-time All-American in the high jump (1978 and 1980) ... Set the current school record in the high jump, 6-2, in 1980 ... Also holds the school record in the 55-meter hurdles (7.97) set in 1979.
Marchelle Payne, Maryland (1990-1993) A three-time All-American in the triple jump (1990, 1992 and 1993) ... ACC Champion in the triple jump in 1992 and 1993 ... All-ACC selection three consecutive years (1991-93) ... Holds the school record in the triple jump (42-11 ľ).
Rosalind Taylor, Maryland (1986-1989) A four-time All-American between cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field ... All-American in the 1,000-yards in 1987 and in the 1,500-meters in 1989 ... Two-time ACC Champion in the 1,500-meters in 1987 and 1989 ... Holds the ACC record in the 1,500-meters (4:13.42) ... An All-ACC selection in 1987 ... School record holder in the 1,500-meters and the 3,000-meters.
Marita Walton, Maryland (1980-1983) A six-time All-American in the shot put (1980-1983) and discus (1980, 1982) ... At the 1982 ACC Championships, came away with titles in the shot put and the discus ... ACC record-holder in the shot put (55-9) ... Holds the school record in both the shot put (55-11 ľ) and the discus (170-5).
