EMMITSBURG, Md. - Alex Lundy on Friday became the second University of Maryland men's runner in as many years to earn the individual title at the Mount Saint Mary's Duals cross country event.

Lundy, a Terrapin sophomore, covered the 5-kilometer distance in 16:11.6, edging Nick Ryan of American by less than a second. A year ago, Mike Cator made the most of his first race in Maryland jersey by winning the individual title at the same event, finishing less than a half-second better than Lundy's mark.

As a team, the Maryland men finished 3-2 in the dual-meet scoring among the six teams that participated.

UMBC went 5-0 by placing four runners among the top eight individuals, led by sophomore Paul Zwama, who was fourth in 16:18.7. The Retrievers got the sixth, seventh and eighth spots, then placed their fifth finisher 16th to sweep the dual-meet scoring.

American finished with a 4-1 mark, earning a 28-31 win over Maryland to edge the Terps for second place.

Also for the Terrapins, Drew Abernathy was fifth overall in 16:19.8, while Kevin Gahr was ninth at 16:26.5. Joe Simpson was fourth for Maryland and 19th overall at 16:51.6, with freshman Max Bruno in 30th overall at 17:28.6.

Maryland defeated George Washington (16-39), Temple (24-32) and the host Mountaineers (20-35), while losing to UMBC (25-31) and American.

On the women's side, senior Kylynn McKinley was Maryland's top finisher, placing eighth individually in 19:31.5, leading four Terrapins in the top 19 and five among the top 27 individuals.

Maryland finished the team scoring 5-1 among the seven teams competing, losing the dual-meet scoring only to Navy, which had six finishers among the top seven, including a sweep from third to seventh.

Navy junior Amy Watson covered the 5K course in 18:47.0 to win the individual event. Navy scored a perfect 15 points against each squad except American, which got freshman Octavia Rinehardt in second at 18:57.3.

Junior Danielle Karagannis was the second Maryland runner across the line in 19:52.6, freshman Ashley Cromartie was 17th at 20:06.4 and senior Amanda Robotti was 19th at 20:14.2, some 50 seconds better than her time at the same meet last season. Angeli Sivaraman was 27th in 20:49.7 for the Terps.

Maryland's men and women travel to the Navy Invitational on Sept. 13.
