LANDOVER, Md. - Gerrick McPhearson won the men's 60-meter dash, while Dominic Berger captured the men's 60-meter hurdles, leading University of Maryland performances Saturday at the 2005 Maryland Indoor Invitational track and field meet held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

McPhearson won the final of the 60 meters in 6.84 seconds, winning the event by 0.21 seconds over John Bailey of Hampton. McPhearson, a junior cornerback on the Terrapin football team, is in his first season with the Maryland track team.

Berger is a freshman for Maryland and earned the victory in the men's 60-meter hurdles. He went 8.06 seconds. Jacoby DuBose of Howard was second at 8.12, while sophomore Adam Durham was third in a season-best and IC4A-qualifying 8.17 seconds.

Senior Rob Frelow won the men's 200 meters for the Terps at 22.38, the best time for Maryland this season. Detric Branch of NC Central was second in 22.46.

For the Maryland women, junior Lynn Hernandez won the long jump, going 20 feet, 3 inches. Her performance was a provisional-qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Nationals to be held in March.

Junior Renee Clarke won the 200-meter dash for the Terps in 25.42 seconds, the first time she has run that event in competition during this indoor season. Erica Day of Howard was second at 25.52. Bria Johnson won the women's shot put at 45-10.75.

Danielle Siebert led a strong grouping in the women's mile run for the Terps, finishing second in 5:04.47. Kathy Newberry, running unattached, won the women's mile in 4:51.98. Maryland held four of the top seven places in the mile, as Shari Gorga, Katie Purcell and Cori Koch went 4-6-7 in the mile.

Kierra Foster trimmed her season-best mark in the women's 60-meter hurdles with her third-place finish at 8.57 seconds. Her mark improved her qualifying time for the ECAC Championships. Zakiya Shivers placed second in the women's 20-pound weight throw at 47-7.25.

Also on the men's side, sophomore Peter Hess had a big day, placing second in both the mile and the 800 meters. Hess went 4:12.18 in the mile and 1:55.38 in the 800, posting the Terps' best marks of the indoor season in each event. His time in the mile was a qualifying mark for the IC4A Championships later in the season.
