CLEMSON, S.C. - Christina Smith and Katie Rogus each scored career-bests in the pentathlon competition Thursday which opened the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, being hosted by Clemson at the Rock Norman Track.
Smith, a Terrapin junior, placed 12th in the competition with a total of 3,493 points. Her combined total over the five events moved her into second all-time at Maryland. Rogus was 14th, with the sophomore's total of 3,297 topping her total from a year ago by 43 points.
Smith's best score of the day came in the first event, when she earned 869 points for a 9.20 clocking in the 60-meter hurdles. In terms of placing, Smith's best event was the shot put, where her mark of 44 feet, 0 inches earned her second in the field and 755 points.
Rogus had 844 points in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.32. She was fifth in the final event of the day, the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:26.45 to earn 738 points.
Liane Weber of Clemson won the pentathlon competition with 4,089 points. She tied for the win in the high jump (5-7.25) and was second in the long jump and 800. Gunild Kreb of Virginia Tech was second at 3,996 points.
The ACC Indoor Championships continue through Saturday afternoon.
