COLLEGE PARK, Md. - This weekend's Last Chance Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., will provide one more opportunity for individuals who have not qualified for postseason competition to do so. The meet will be the team's final before the ECAC and IC4A championships, which are to be held in Fairfax, Va.

Twelve members of the women's team have qualified for the Eastern Colleges of America Conference (ECAC) Championships. In addition, four men have qualified for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championships. Many others have come close to qualifying, and the hope is that this weekend's meet will get them under the respective qualifying standards.

TEAMS SPLIT UP OVER WEEKEND, TURN IN STRONG PERFORMANCES
The teams competed at two separate meets last Saturday, as head coach Bill Goodman sent some athletes to the Mason/Adidas Invitational in Fairfax, Va., and some to the Aggie All-Comers Meet in College Station, Texas.

The women fared well at both meets. In Fairfax, sophomore Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.) took first place in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 1/2. In addition, freshman Tracey Ojeniyi (Sewell, N.J.) placed second in the javelin. Senior Heather Atkinson (Urbana, Ill.), junior Cathy Porter (Millersville, Md.), sophomore Tene Aiken (Sewell, N.J.), and freshman Ruth Kura (North Potomac, Md.) finished second through fifth in the hammer.

At the Aggie All-Comers Meet, junior Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, N.J.) finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 54.13. In addition, the 4x400 relay team took first with a time of 3:43.42.

The men were led by a trio of freshmen at the Mason/Adidas Invitational. Freshman Andrew Long (Columbia, Md.) had his second strong outing in as many weeks. Long placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-9. Freshman James Gondak (Doylestown, Pa.) finished third in the hammer and freshman Dontae Bugg (Newport News, Va.) placed fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.46.

In College Station, sophomore Cedrick Rogers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) took eighth in the long jump with a leap of 24-1. Junior Jason Joubert (Rockville, Md.) placed 12th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.02.

MARYLAND WOMEN 20TH IN NATIONAL DUAL MEET RANKINGS
The women's track team ranks 20th in the latest edition of the outdoor National Dual Meet Power Rankings, which are compiled by Idaho State University. The women are coming off last weekend's meets at Texas A&M and George Mason, neither of which was team-scored.

SCHOOL RECORDS CONTINUE TO FALL
A total of seven women's school records have been broken since the beginning of the indoor season, one more than all of last year. 1998-99 has seen more women's records fall than any other year except the 1996-97 season, in which eight new records were established.

MISCELLANEOUS
With his second-place finish in the shot put at the Mason Adidas Invitational, Andrew Long completed his team-leading 10th top-10 finish this outdoor season. Long had eight top-10 finishes during all of the indoor season ... Jason Joubert is the team leader in top-three finishes with five during the outdoor season ... With her fourth-place performance at the Aggie-All-Comers Meet, Candyce DeLoatch has now had six top-five finishes during the outdoor season. Of the seven races in which she has competed, DeLoatch has won four and finished second twice ... DeLoatch has re-established the women's standard in the 400.
