Barer, Foster Have Strong First Day at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Zhanna Barer placed third in the women's pole vault and Kierra Foster finished fifth in the championship flight of the women's long jump to lead University of Maryland performances Thursday in the Penn Relays being held at historic Franklin Field.

Barer equaled her season-best mark of 12 feet, 5.50 inches to place third in the vault. Foster had her second-best long jump of the outdoor season, clearing 19-11.75 to place fifth in a national-class field.

Also for Maryland, Bria Johnson had a season-best 45-7 to finish fifth in the shot put, while Zakiya Shivers was 13th in the women's hammer with a season-best 164-4.

Peter Hess placed 15th in a strong national field in the men's 5,000 meters, running just off his season-best at 14:19.34. Meghan Braffet was 16th in the championship flight of the women's 5,000 at 17:04.15.
