UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Greg Kelsey had his second straight outstanding performance in as many meets Saturday, claiming a fifth-place individual finish at the Penn State National cross country meet, held at the Blue and White Golf Courses.

Kelsey, a graduate student at Maryland, finished the 5.2-mile course in 25 minutes, 30 seconds, missing third place by just one second. Kelsey was just seven seconds behind the winner, as Terefe Ejigu of Eastern Michigan took the individual title in the field of 263 runners.

After receiving a medical hardship waiver for a fifth season of competition, Kelsey has made the most of his opportunity. He got a 10th-place finish two weeks ago at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh.

As a team, the Maryland men finished 14th of 27 teams with a score of 402. Syracuse, ranked 14th nationally, won the men's team title with 61 points, followed by Penn State with 91 and Villanova with 95.

Fellow Terp grad student Dan McDevitt was the second Maryland runner to the line, crossing 66th overall in 26:36. Other Maryland scorers included freshman Cory Puffett (123rd, 27:11), sophomore Craig Morgan (136th, 27:23) and sophomore Brian Faherty (150th, 27:33).

For the women, Maryland sophomore Julie Fricke led her teammates to the line for the third straight race, finishing 37th overall and leading the Terrapins to a 12th-place team finish.

Fricke covered the 6-kilometer course in 21:47, running better than a six-minute pace per mile. She also was the leading Terp finisher at the Navy Invitational and the Paul Short Run. Maryland's five scorers packed within a 1:06 time period, helping keep the Terps' score to 404 points in the 31-team field.

Senior Ashley Campbell was 78th overall in 22:23, with Ashley Cromartie (92nd, 22:31), Ashlyn Sinclair (117th, 22:50) and Andrea Rothschild (120th, 22:53) also scoring for the Terps.

Sheila Reid (20:23) and Amanda Marino (20:30) of Villanova finished 1-2 to help the No.1-ranked Wildcats to the team win with only 26 points. All five Villanova scorers placed in the top 10.

No. 7 Syracuse was second with 57 points with the host Nittany Lions in third with 137. The Penn State National was contested over the same courses that will host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Nov. 13.

Maryland will compete next on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at Boston College.
