Hess Places Third as Armory Meet Finishes

NEW YORK - NEW YORK -- Peter Hess of Maryland just missed a win when he got out-kicked at the end of the men's 3,000-meter run on Saturday at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational indoor track and field meet held at the New York Armory.

Hess placed third in 8:20.84, just over a half-second behind Jonathan Lewis of Texas A&M and Ryan Hayden of Villanova. Hess' time was the best of the season thus far by a Terrapin. Florent Groberg hit a qualifying mark for the IC4A Championship with his seventh-place finish in 8:24.84.

Renee Clarke posted a season-best of 56.38 seconds in the 400 meters, while Danielle Siebert placed second in the women's collegiate mile at 4:51.43. Toni Aluko, who had won the collegiate flight of the high jump with a leap of 5-10 on Friday, followed up with a fifth-place finish in the triple jump at 38-0.25.

Rob Frelow reached the finals of the 400 meters with a season-best 47.61. He improved his placing one spot in the final, going 47.66 to earn sixth. Sean Lowe made the most of his first 400-meter effort of the season, going 48.59 in qualifying to get a spot at the IC4A Meet.

Maryland's throwers participated in the Carolina Classic held in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday. Bria Johnson posted a fourth-place finish in the women's shot put at 45-1.50, while Beau Fay was fourth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 56-5.25.

Maryland competes next weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va.
