Braffet Wins ACC Championship

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Meghan Braffet won the ACC Championship in the 10,000 meters to lead University of Maryland performances in the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Braffet's win was the first-ever in the event in Terrapin history and her time of 35:39.38 was a Kentner Stadium record. Her mark was also the second-best in school history, behind Jennifer Van Horn who set a time of 34:09.26 in 1991.

Finishing behind Braffet, who earned 10 points for the Terps, were teammates Cori Koch and Katie Purcell. Koch ran a 37:07.03 to place seventh, and earn two points, while Purcell placed ninth with a time of 27:26.99.

On the men's side, Beau Fay placed eighth in the hammer, with a mark of 180-11, to earn one point for the Terps. Devin Regan posted a mark of 176-11 in the javelin and also finished eighth and earned one point for his team.

In the women's pole vault, Kaitlyn Fitzgerald placed eighth and Zhana Barer finished 11th. Fitzgerald's mark of 11-09.75 earned one point for the Terps, while Barer vaulted for a mark of 11-03.75.

Jillian Anwah and Aysha Gregory placed 12th and 15th respectively in the women's hammer. Anwah posted a mark of 150-07, while Gregory registered a throw of 146-01.

In the heptathlon, Christina Smith came in 12th with 2679, while Katie Rogus placed 13th, with 2570.

In the men's 10,000 meters, Tyler McCandless placed 14th with a time of 32:57.68. Teammate Pat Reaves ran a 34:29.03, to finish 16th.

After the first day of competition, the Terrapin women are tied for 5th place with 13 points, while the men sit in 10th place with 2 points.
