COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland mens and womens indoor track teams will kick off their seasons this weekend as they travel to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Invitational. The meet will mark the first of three competitions in the opening weekend of the track season. Following the Navy Invitational, the teams will travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to compete in the Bucknell Invitational. In addition, selected members of the teams might compete in the West Virginia Pentathlon.

Head coach Bill Goodman is entering his 12th season as the leader of the Terps. His staff of assistants includes Ronald Desonier, entering his 10th year at Maryland, and Donald Thomas, who is in his fourth year. Cross country coach Dan Rincon, in his 12th year at Maryland, handles the distance events.

Goodman and his assistants will have a host of returning standouts, especially on the womens team. Eight members of the womens team currently hold a school record. The mens team also returns several key performers from a year ago.

As is usually the case at the start of a season, there is some uncertainty as to how Maryland will fare this year. Given the vast number of teams that will be competing, this weekends meets should provide an accurate indication as to where the teams stand.

The meets will be followed by an idle period of over a month during which no competitions will be held.

Quoting Head Coach Dan Rincon

On the Maryland Invite:
"We were, of course, happy to come away with the win. It should help our confidence for the upcoming meet...I had indicated to them that we needed to go out and dominate this meet and they did just that."

On the Mount St. Marys Invite:
"Its time to take the next step up. Were going to have a tough go at Mount. St. Marys. Theyre a real strong team. Were going to have to give our best for that."
