Reed Finishes Fifth Overall for Terp Women at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior Kristen Reed placed fifth overall to lead the University of Maryland to a third-place finish in the team standings Saturday at the Salty Dog Invitational women's cross country meet hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.

On the men's side, sophomore Alex Lundy finished second individually to lead the Maryland to a third-place finish as a team at the Navy Invitational.

Lundy covered the 8-kilometer men's course in 24 minutes, 51.3 seconds, placing behind only junior Matt Llano of Richmond, who ran 24:38.3. Two weeks ago, in Maryland's first outing of the season, Lundy won the individual title at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational.

Greg Kelsey also earned a top-10 finish, placing sixth in 25:10.1. The other three Terrapin scorers finished in a tight pack. Richie Booth was 24th in 26:16.6, Drew Abernathy placed 26th in 26:22.0 and Joe Simpson was 27th in 26:27.7.

Maryland's 85 points were behind only the host Midshipmen with 64 and Richmond, with 80. Navy placed all five scorers in the top 20, while Richmond held the No. 1 and No. 3 spot.

Also for Maryland, Mike Cator was 33rd in 26:41.5, Kevin Gahr placed 64th in 27:40.1 and Josh Davis was 72nd in 27:50.3.

On the women's side, Maryland scored 75 points to trail Richmond's 42 and Navy's 55. The Spiders had three finishers in the top seven and five in the top 14, while Navy had six finishers in the top 18.

Reed covered the 6K course in 23:01.0 to place fifth individually. Amy Watson of Navy won the individual title in 22:26.0, with Nicole Traynor of Richmond in second at 22:39.

Lindsay Ritchings gave the Terrapins another top-10 finish by placing eighth in 23:14.6, with Erin Matyus in 11th at 23:20. The other scorers were Danielle Karagannis, who was 20th at 23:49.0 and Ashley Campbell, who was 36th in 24:29.0.

Also for Maryland, Andrea Rothschild was 39th in 24:31.0, Ashley Cromartie was 53rd in 25.09.0 and Amanda Robotti was 61st in 25:16.

Maryland appears next at the George Mason Invitational on Oct. 4.
