O'Leary Has Strong Collegiate Debut

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Freshman Sean O'Leary had a strong collegiate debut in his first race as a Maryland Terrapin on Friday, placing seventh overall at the Mount St. Mary's Duals in the cross country season-opener for the Terps.

O'Leary finished the men's 5K course in 15:57.1. Junior Chris Conway was 15th overall in 16:07.8, as the Terrapins sent two runners to the event.

On the women's side, freshman Maryam Fikri was the first Maryland finisher, completing the 5-kilometer course in 20:07.8 and placing 15th overall. The Terrapins packed well, as all five competitors were within 15th and 26th overall and within 51 seconds at the finish.

Maryland, which sent two sophomores and three freshmen to the meet, defeated George Washington, St. Francis, Pa., and UMBC. The Terps lost to American, George Mason and host Mount St. Mary's to finish 3-3 in the dual-meet scoring.

Freshman Bridget Nolan was 17th overall in 20:26.4, sophomore Christy Goldmann was 23rd in 20:52.5, freshman Lauren Sumner ran 21:10.7 to place 24th, with sophomore Anna Roth in 25th in 21:17.0.

Maryland will return to competition on Sept. 18 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis.
