LANDOVER, MD- Though many expect a new year will bring with it change, the winning faces remained the same as the Terps opened the 2002 portion of their indoor season Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Terrapin Invitational.

Senior Ruth Kura (Potomac, Md.), juniors Natalie Dye (Myersville, Md.) and Tia Burle(Baltimore, Md.) along with sophomore Toni Jefferson (Baltimore, Md.) and the women's 4x400-meter relay claimed victories for the Terps.

Kura followed up a victory at the first meet of the season by breaking her own Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex Record in the 20-lb. weight throw with a toss of 60-8. Also breaking a Complex record and taking first was the women's 4x400-meter relay team with a time of 3:45.69.

Although Dye didn't match her career high jump of 12-6 which she set at the Maryland Invitational, she was able to secure a vault of 12-0 to place in her a tie for first.

After qualifying for the ECAC Championships in the 60 meters and the long jump at the first meet, Jefferson added a third event when she won the 200 meters with a time of 24.52

Rounding out the group of winners was Burley, who took the 400 meters with a time of 55.12, which also qualified for the ECAC Championships.

Other women who qualified were seniors Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.) in the 60-meter hurdles and Tracy Ojeyini (Sewell, N.J.) in the pentathlon, and junior Heather Houston (Fort Washington, Md.) in the long jump.

Leading the men were hurdlers seniors Phillip Barrett (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Dontae Bugg (Newport News, Va.). Barrett finished second with a time of 8.09 that qualified him for the IC4A Championships. Bugg finished fourth with a time of 8.27.

The 4x400-meter relay team also had a strong showing for the Terps coming in second place. Junior Adrian Nelson (Washington, D.C.) had another strong performance coming in fourth. Also, freshman Paul Dorsey (Frederick, Md.) contributed a sixth place finish in the 800 meters.

The Terps will face their first road meet of the season next Saturday as they travel to the University of Delaware for the Delaware Invitational.
