COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) and Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.), members of the men's lacrosse and women's track teams, respectively, have been named student-athletes of the week by the Maryland Department of Athletics for the week of May 15-19. This week marks the final selection for the spring 2000 semester.
Combs, a junior attackman, clinched Maryland's win over Hofstra, 14-12, in the first round of the NCAA tournament last weekend, allowing the Terps to advance to the second round this weekend. Combs netted the final three goals of the game for the Terps, including his tie-breaking goal with 5:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. Combs scored his final two goals to put the Terps up 14-11 with 2:18 remaining in the contest.
Combs has had a tremendous season and has improved in multiple statistical categories. His 22 goals this season have doubled the 15 goals he scored in his previous two seasons. Combs has netted 37 goals for his career and has recorded 12 assists for a total of 49 points. He has scored at least two goals in seven games this season. Additionally, Combs shattered his previous career-high of three goals when he put five goals in the net against UMBC on May 6.
Jones, a junior, continued to dominate the high jump as she took first with her leap of 6-0 ˝ last weekend. Her mark at the Seminole Twilight meet qualified her for the Olympic Trials, and tied for the fifth-best collegiate mark this season. Jones also improved on her NCAA provisional qualifying mark, she is only a quarter of an inch from meeting the automatic qualifying mark.
Jones' first-place finish in the high jump last weekend marks the fourth time this season she has earned first place. Jones took first at both of Maryland's home meets. Her jump of 5-10 ˝ earned her first at the Maryland Invitational, and the following week she took first again with a leap of 5-11 Ľ at the Terrapin Invitational. Additionally, Jones' first-place mark of 6-0 at the ACC Championships was instrumental in leading the Terps to their highest finish in 13 years.
This week marks the second time Combs has received student-athlete of the week honors and the first time for Jones. Combs is majoring in communications and Jones is a chemistry major.
