COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland cross country and track teams excelled both on and off the track this year, as 44 student-athletes earned grade-point averages of 3.0 or better to earn Intercollegiate Athletics Honor Roll status. Additionally, eight cross country and track members earned perfect 4.0 GPAs in either the fall or spring, and three achieved that mark in both semesters.
For the men's team, junior Chris Ader and freshman Pat McHenry posted 4.0 GPAs for the year, and were part of 17 total men to be named on the honor roll. This puts the men third out of all Maryland sports teams, behind only football and men's lacrosse.
Boasting 27 total women on the honor roll, the women's cross country and track squads lead all Maryland teams in number of athletes honored. Senior Natalie Dye achieved a 4.0 in both the fall and spring, and was the only Terp to receive first team all-district academic honors. Dye also received honors as a second-team 2003 Verizon Academic All-American, thanks to her 3.97 graduating GPA in biochemistry.
In school-wide totals, a sum of 280 Maryland student-athletes earned honor roll status in either the fall or spring and a school-record 68 recorded a 4.0 GPA for either semester. The 280 receiving honors marks an increase of 20 percent over the previous academic year.
