Durham, N.C. - Meghan Braffet was the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000 meters to highlight University of Maryland performances during the first day of the Duke Invitational track and field meet yesterday.
Braffet's time of 16:44.75 was good for second place overall in the event and was an NCAA Regional and ECAC qualifying time. Teammate Cori Koch placed 17th in the same event, with a time of 17:38.07.
On the men's side, Beau Fay placed third overall and second among collegiate athletes in the hammer with a season-best and IC4A qualifying mark of 180-10. Salvador Delhierro posted a throw of 160-00 to place 11th in the event.
In the men's 10,000 meters, freshman Tyler McCandless placed fifth, running a 31:39.70, in his first collegiate 10,000 meters competition.
In the women's hammer, Jillian Anwah and Aysha Gregory both finished in the top ten. Anwah's throw of 163-03 placed her fifth and was a season-best and ECAC qualifying mark. Gregory placed ninth with a mark of 154-09. She has already qualified for the ECAC Championships.
Kaitlyn Fitzgerald had a mark of 11-05.75 in the pole vault, which was good for an eighth place finish. The vault tied her season-best mark, which she had at the Navy Invitational.
