BLACKSBURG, Va. - Jillian Anwah set personal indoor-bests in the throwing events for the women, while freshman Jason Allen won his first collegiate long jump competition on the men's side to highlight University of Maryland performances this weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational indoor track and field meet held at the Rector Field House.

Anwah finished fourth in the women's 20-pound weight throw for the Terrapins, with her mark of 59 feet, 9 inches being the second-best in school history and giving her a qualifying mark for the ECAC Indoor Championships in March. On Saturday, her mark of 49-8.50 in the shot put gave her a fifth-place finish and another ECAC mark.

Allen made the most of his Terrapin debut, winning the men's long jump in 24-2.25. His IC4A-qualifying mark moved him into eighth place on Maryland's all-time list indoors and put him within range of an NCAA-provisional mark. He won the event over Jangy Addy of Tennessee by almost seven inches.

Also for the Maryland men, junior All-American Dominic Berger had a solid debut to his 2007 indoor season. On Saturday, he finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a mark of 7.32, but posted a school-record 7.25 in a semifinal heat on Friday that gave him a NCAA-provisional mark. Maryland's previous record in the 55-meter hurdles was 7.41, set by Asa Heath.

In addition to Allen, some other Maryland freshman had strong debuts for the men. Jeremy Samuels was second (48.58), and helped junior Sean Lowe (48.71) to the top of the charts in the 400 meters, both earning IC4A marks. Freshman Victor Gilreath also hit an IC4A mark with his seventh-place finish of 47-5.25 in the triple jump.

For the Maryland women, junior Toni Aluko placed second in the women's high jump at 5-8.75, just off the NCAA provisional mark in that event. She matched the winning jump of Meggie Scheulke of Virginia, but placed second due to more misses.

Other Maryland athletes with top-10 finishes included Andrea Rothschild (5th at 5,000 meters), Lindsay Ritchings (5th in mile), Kaitlyn Fitzgerald (T9th in pole vault), Kyle Rauser (9th in men's 800), Tommy Friscia (8th in 1,000, 10th in 800), David Edwards-Brennan (T6th in high jump), Chris Haley (8th in high jump) and Jayson Alexander (10th in long jump).

Maryland hosts the Terrapin Indoor Invitational next Saturday at the P.G. Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. It is the only home indoor event of the season for the Terrapins.
