Maryland Men's Track Team Finishes Strong Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Hughlighting its 2000 season, the Maryland men's track team placed second at the Terrapin Invitational (April 8), fourth at the Maryland Invitational (April 1) and had six athletes qualify for the IC4A Championships at Princeton University.

Terps Take Second At Terrapin Invitational Senior John Carr (Washington, D.C.) won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.48 and the 200 meter dash in a time of 21.48 and sophomore Phillip Barrett (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished first in the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.55 to lead the Terps to a second-place finish at the Terrapin Invitational on April 8 at the Kehoe Track and Field Complex. Senior Jason Joubert (Rockville, Md.) won the 400 hurdles in a time of 53.41. Junior Cedrick Rogers won the long jump with a mark of 24-11. In addition, the 4x100 relay team placed first with a time of 42.80.

Terps Place Fourth At Maryland Invitational John Carr won the 100 in a time of 10.67 to lead the Terps to a fourth-place finish at the Maryland Invitational on April 1. Rhode Island won the competition with a score of 177.5, followed by Northeastern (137), Millersville (98), Maryland (83) and Delaware State (74.5). Also faring well for the men were junior Cedrick Rogers (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) who won the long jump with a mark of 24-3 and Phillip Barrett (Upper Marlboro, Md.) who placed second in the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.69. Senior Jason Joubert finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.21.

Terps Perform Well at George Mason Invite In one of its final qualifying meets of the season, Maryland had a number of individual athletes turn in outstanding performances at the George Mason Invitational on May 6. Jason Joubert (Rockville, Md.) placed second in the 400 hurdles in a time of 52.81, his second fastest time in the event. Junior Cedrick Rogers took second place in the long jump with a leap of 23-11 ľ. In addition, sophomores Andrew Long (Columbia, Md.) and James Gondak (Doylestown, Pa.), as well as freshman John Collins (Clarksburg, Md.) finished 1-2-3 in the hammer. They had marks of 149-10, 148-0, and 136-3, respectively. Long placed fourth in the shot put (46-2 ˝) as well. Sophomore Dontae Bugg (Newport News, Va.) finished second in the 110 hurdles (14.55) and sophomore Phillip Barrett took third (14.69) in the same event. Dave Benaderet (Baltimore, Md.) placed fifth in the 400 in a time of 49.14.

Terps Place Ninth At ACCs Senior John Carr placed sixth in the 100 in a time of 10.96 to earn the Terps' top individual finish at the ACC Championships as the team finished in ninth place. The 4x400 relay team took fifth in a time of 3:15.00, while the 4x100 relay team finished sixth in a mark of 42.55. Clemson won the meet, followed by Florida State and North Carolina State.

Carr Posts Fourth Fastest Time In 100 Meters Senior John Carr ran a career-best 10.48 in the 100-meter dash at the Maryland Invitational on April 1. His time is tied for the fourth fastest 100-meter time in school history with Bob Calhoun who was also timed at 10.48 during the 1978 season. Former world record-holder Renaldo Nehemiah established the school record time of 10.18 during the 1978 season. Carr placed first in the event as he shaved nearly three-tenths of a second off of his pervious fastest time.

Joubert Tops Career Best, Moves Up On Career List Senior Jason Joubert ran a career-best 51.54 in the 400 meter hurdles at the ACC championships on April 22. Joubert's time ranks as the fifth fastest time in the event in school history. Joubert is the only runner in school history to have posted two of the top six times in the 400 meter hurdles in school history.

Rogers' Jump at Terrapin Invitational Is Among School Best Junior Cedrick Rogers' career-best long jump of 24-11 at the Terrapin Invitational ranks as the eighth best long jump in school history. During the season, Rogers completed three of his five jumps in the finals of an event beyond 24 feet.
