COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A total of 26 collegiate track and field teams will get the chance to compete in an important early-season event this Saturday when the University of Maryland hosts the Terrapin Invitational indoor track and field meet at the PG Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.

Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. with the men's weight throw, while the running events begin at 11 a.m. with the women's distance medley relay. The meet is scheduled to finish around 7 p.m., depending on the number of entrants.

The meet gives area schools an excellent chance at continuing their training in what Maryland head coach Andrew Valmon terms an important environment.

"The competition is valuable," said Valmon, the Olympian now in his fourth season as head coach of the Terrapins. "This meet gives all the local schools a chance to showcase their talent.

"The big part of our schedule is fast approaching and league championships will be here in the blink of an eye. This gives our student-athletes a chance to train and get battle-tested during competition, which is extremely valuable."

The list of local schools sending competitors includes American, Bowie State, Catholic, UDC, Georgetown, Howard, Johns Hopkins, Loyola, Morgan State, UMBC and Virginia.

Maryland's early season has been highlighted by All-America hurdler Dominic Berger, who hit a NCAA-provisional mark with his second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles last week at Virginia Tech, as well as a strong class of newcomers on the men's side.

The Terrapin women were sparked last week by junior Jillian Anwah, who had personal-bests in both the shot put and weight throw. Toni Aluko also finished second in the women's high jump for the Terps at Virginia Tech.
