- University of Maryland's women's indoor track and field team began the new year in style Saturday afternoon, turning in eight first-place finishes at the Terrapin/PVA Invitational at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
The Terps, seeing their first action in nearly a month, posted victories in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, mile, 3000 meters, weight throw and the 4x400 and distance medley relays.
Junior Toni Jefferson was among those who led the way for the host Terps, winning the 200 meters in a time of 24.71 and finishing second in the 60 meters in a time of 7.53. Teammate Devenn Hamilton had a first-place showing in the 400 meters (56.48) and a third-place showing in the 200 meters (25.61).
Kim Smith led a 1-2-3-4 Terrapin finish in the mile, clocking a time of 5:16.74. She was followed by Ashley Tremblay, who finished second in a time of 5:24.89.
Other event winners included Kelly Wallace in the 800 meters (2:15.44), Katie Purcell in the 3000 meters (10:23.59) and Aranda Brown in the weight throw (15.74 meters).
Maryland now prepares for the Delaware Invitational, which takes place Friday, Jan. 10.
