COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland will send nine men to Boston, Mass., to compete in the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championships this weekend. The team will be represented in eight events (shot put, 500 meters, 60, 200, 55 hurdles, weight throw, long jump, and 4x400 relay) and will be led by juniors Jamie Wu (Chicago, Ill.) and John Carr (Washington, D.C.), the only team members to qualify for IC4A competition in two events. Other qualifiers include freshman Dontae Bugg (Newport News, Va.), juniors Cedric Rogers and Jason Joubert (Rockville, Md.), and senior Asa Heath (Richmond, Va.). In addition, seniors Justin James (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Trevor Graves (South Orange, N.J.), junior Richard Mahy (Gaithersburg, Md.), and Joubert will combine to run the 4x400 relay. The 55 hurdles will feature one of the team's most accomplished and experienced hurdlers, Heath, as well as one of the team's brightest young stars, Bugg.

WOMEN'S TRACK FINISHES 11TH AT ECAC'S Junior sprinter Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, N.J.) was victorious once again in the 400 meters helping the Maryland women finish 11th out of 43 teams at the Eastern Colleges of America Conference (ECAC) Championships this weekend. DeLoatch, who has dominated the event in recent weeks, took first place in 54.54 seconds. She has now won the event at four different meets this season, setting the school record three times. DeLoatch's victory was complemented by three top-12 Maryland finishers in the 20-pound weight throw. Freshman standout Ruth Kura (North Potomac, Md.) finished fourth in the event with a throw of 57-3. She was followed by senior Heather Atkinson (Urbana, Ill.) who placed eighth (53-3 3/4), and junior Cathy Porter (Millersville, Md.) who took 11th (50-11 1/2).

Also performing well for the Terps was senior Melody Vaughn (Houston, Texas) who placed third in the long jump with a distance of 19-2 1/2. Senior Tesheya Hoist (Rocky Mount, N.C.) set a personal best in the 60 as she took seventh place with a time of 7.62. In addition, sophomore Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.) finished eighth in the high jump with a leap of 5-7.

George Mason University won the competition with a score of 101 points. Next were Pittsburgh (70.5), West Virginia (62.5), Penn State (49), and Seton Hall (49). Maryland was only one point out of the top 10 and four points out of the top seven.

QUOTING HEAD COACH BILL GOODMAN On the women's ECAC Championships: "We were really happy about Candyce. There are a lot of great athletes out there and it's not easy to win an ECAC Championship." On the men's Last Chance Invitational: "I think we were affected (at the Last Chance Invite) by putting so much into the ACC's last week. Not a whole lot of spectacular things happened for us down there." On the IC4A's this weekend: "We're going to try to get our freshman (Bugg) into the finals and better our relay team. We're aiming for a top-eight finsh. "

MISCELLANEOUS With her victory last weekend, Candyce DeLoatch tied Vanessa Jones and junior Stacey Minott (Greenburg, N.Y.) for the most first-place finishes this season in any event. Jones has four victories in the high jump, DeLoatch has four victories in the 400, and Minott has three wins in the 55 and one in the 60 ... Sophomore Rebecca Mack (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) has made a significant impact in the intermediate distance events over the last few weeks. Her time of 2:56.20 in the preliminaries of the 1,000 last weekend broke the team's season best that Mack set at the Army Invitational ... While Dontae Bugg has made the biggest impact for a freshman on the men's team, Ruth Kura has been the freshman making the most noise for the women. Her fourth place finish last weekend marks the sixth time she has placed in the top-five of the weight throw this season.
