COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Washington area fans of college track and field will get a treat on Saturday when the University of Maryland hosts the Terrapin Invitational indoor meet at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
Some 34 teams with an estimated 1,100 athletes are entered in the meet, which is the Terrapins' only home event of the indoor season. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m., with the first running events scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
The Terrapins are fielding one of their strongest squads ever on both the men's and women's side and the early results from previous events have been excellent.
Three student-athletes - sophomore Dominic Berger and seniors Kierra Foster and Lynn Hernandez - have already posted provisional-qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Nationals in March. Berger will be featured in the hurdles on Saturday, while Foster and Hernandez have already gone over 20 feet in the women's long jump.
Thus far, 15 Terrapin student-athletes and two relay teams have already qualified for the ECAC and IC4A Championships to be held in Boston in early March. This is the earliest the qualifying list has been this large in a season in recent memory.
Full results of the meet will be available following the meet at UMTerps.com.
