Shivers Sharp in Terp Track Finale

NEW YORK - Junior Zakiya Shivers posted a season-best mark of 156 feet, 2 inches, to finish ninth overall in the women's discus Saturday in the final day of the NCAA East Regional track and field championships held at new Icahn Stadium in Manhattan.

Shivers made the final on the strength of her first attempt in the competition, which ended up being her best. She missed scoring for the Terps by just two inches, when Lindsey Nelson of Florida State beat her on her fifth of six attempts. Rachel Longfors of Florida won the discus at 181-3, with the top five finishers advancing to the NCAA Nationals to be held in Sacramento.

Also for Maryland on Saturday, Bria Johnson placed 19th in the women's shot put at 44-6.25, while sophomore Matt Sanders was 34th in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:46.26.

Maryland did not score in the team competition. Florida State won the men's team title by three points over Florida, while South Carolina rolled to the team victory on the women's side.
