TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior Kierra Foster and sophomore Zhanna Barer each earned third-place finishes in their events Friday to highlight University of Maryland performances at the second day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Florida State.

Foster placed third in the women's long jump at 19 feet, 11 inches. Barer earned a career-best mark with her third-place finish in the women's pole vault, clearing 12-5.50 to earn a trip to both the NCAA Regional and the ECAC Championships coming up in May. Barer's mark moved her into second all-time at Maryland.

As a team, the Maryland women were in 10th place with 15 points after eight of the 20 events were finished. The ACC Championships wrap up with a full day of events on Saturday. The meet was delayed at one point Friday due to lightning.

The Maryland men were in 10th place after the second day. Matt Sanders scored the lone point for the Terps in the finals contested on Friday, placing eighth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:08.07, cutting 23 seconds off his previous season-best.

The Maryland men are poised to score more points on Saturday, placing two runners in the final of the 110-meter hurdles (Dominic Berger and Adam Durham), as well as a pair in the final of the 400 meters (Sean Lowe and Rob Frelow, each of whom ran season-best and IC4A-qualifying times).

Also for Maryland on Friday, freshman Christina Smith placed eighth in her first collegiate heptathlon, scoring 4,440 points. Her point total was sixth among recent marks by the Terps in that combined event.

Zakiya Shivers placed eighth in the shot put at 46-0.50, the third-best mark all-time by a Terrapin woman and nearly three feet past her season-best. Bria Johnson also had a season-best to place 11th.

Shari Gorga scored for the Terps with an eighth-place finish in the women's steeplechase, running 11:03.51. Also for the Maryland women, Renee Clarke (400), Danielle Siebert (800), Foster (100 hurdles) and Amanda Radziminski (400 hurdles) all hit ECAC-qualifying marks.
