Terps Wrap Up Day Two At ACC Indoor Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Maryland women's track and field team is in seventh and the men's team is in eight after two days at the ACC Indoor Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. Through six events, the Terp women have 16 points, while the men have 11.

Miami leads the women's race with 48 points, followed by North Carolina (30.50). On the men's side, Clemson leads with 58 points, 18 points ahead of second-place Florida State. The championship will conclude tomorrow.

Three different Terps scored points on the women's side, highlighted by Kierra Foster's third place finish in the long jump. Foster, who has already automatically qualified for NCAA Championships in the event, jumped 20 feet, 1.75 inches on her second attempt to earn six points for the Terps. Foster also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles after posting a time of 8.51.

Freshman Toni Aluko took fourth in the high jump after clearing 5-7 - the second best jump of her career. Megan Braffet took fifth in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 16:49.33. Her time was just over three seconds off a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Junior Danielle Siebert advanced to Saturday's final in the mile after running 4:53.38 and qualifying sixth.

The men scored their only points of the day in the distance medley relay. Florent Groberg, Robert Frelow, Matt Sanders and Michael Fleg turned in a time of 10:00.68 to finish fourth. Florida State won the event in 9:53.55.

Several Terps positioned themselves for the finals on Saturday. Gerrick McPhearson's 6.76 qualified him third in the 60-meter dash, while Shawn Lowe edged Clemson's Rashad Gardner for the last spot in the 400-meter finals. Lowe clocked a time of 49.86, while Gardner finished in 49.98.

Peter Hess ran a season-best 4:11.90 in the mile to qualify second for tomorrow's final. Dominic Berger will also compete for an ACC title in the 60-meter hurdles after qualifying seventh (8.08).
